Credit: This course has been approved for 1 credit hour of category 2 cultural diversity continuing education credit for New Mexico psychologists.

Summary:  This is a 34 minute long skills building video stream hosted by multicultural experts Drs. Patricia Arredondo and Allen Ivey of a counseling role-play demonstration by Dr. Art Martinez (a Native American Psychologist schooled in traditional ways of counseling) and his Native American client Nora Martinez. Nora is the mother of three children who is married to an alcoholic husband who is also Native American. Nora comes to see this Psychologist employed by Indian Health Services at the point that things are out of control in her family. She as well worries over the impact of the husband’s drinking on the three daughters (ages 6–12). The role-play demonstrates critical elements that include the introduction phase of starting counseling, engaging Native American families, joining the parent as the representative of their family, and then turning the issues that brought the family to treatment in ways to benefit both the family and individual client. Drs. Arredondo and Ivey host the "Debriefing” of the role-play demonstration, and review with Dr. Martinez and Nora Martinez the "Learning Points” of this vignette. NO REPRODUCTION OR DISTRIBUTION OF THIS VIDEO IS PERMITTED WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM MICROTRAINING ASSOCIATES.
