Summary: The following two articles review multicultural counseling competencies as we understand them today. In the first article Dr. Pedersen (2002) describes these competencies as a three stage developmental framework that proceeds from awareness to knowledge and then to skill in defining necessary competencies. Then through a needs assessment process and a skills building exercise he illustrates how one might go about identifying competency areas of strength and weakness. The second article (see Worthington, et. al., 2007) reviews the most current research on multicultural counseling competencies. Empirical questions about the treatment outcome literature on these competencies are posed.
